Read the tyre sidewall
Every tyre has its size printed on the side. You will see one or both of these:
- ETRTO, for example 37-622: tyre width 37 mm, rim diameter 622 mm. This is the most reliable number.
- Inch or metric size, for example 28 x 1.40 or 700 x 35C. These can be confusing because different brands round differently.
Picking a tube
Tubes cover a range of widths. Choose a tube where your tyre width falls inside the range on the box. For a 37-622 tyre, a tube marked 28" 32-47 mm fits.
Valve type
- Presta (thin, with a small screw on top): road and most modern bikes.
- Schrader (car type, wider): kids bikes, city bikes, older mountain bikes.
Check the hole in your rim: a Presta valve rattles in a Schrader hole, and a Schrader valve will not fit a Presta hole.
Valve length
Standard is 40 mm. For rims deeper than 30 mm choose a 60 mm or 80 mm valve, otherwise the pump cannot grip it.
Still unsure?
Send us a photo of the tyre sidewall and the valve and we will tell you exactly which tube to order.
